The New Dundee Board of Trade

board-of-trade-logo-small.jpgThe New Dundee Board of Trade was organized by a group of businessmen and citizens interested in the welfare of the community. It played an important role in the development of New Dundee. The Board of Trade was initially responsible for street lighting, fire protection, policing, sanitation and garbage collection, and the erection of street signs. It was the Board of Trade that purchased the three acres of land that is the community park.

By the early 1970’s township and regional governments assumed these responsibilities and the role of the Board of Trade changed to that of a service club, initiating and assisting in projects that would benefit all residents of the town. Some examples of its efforts included the installation of floodlights for the town’s baseball diamond, replacement of the electrical wiring in the community park, and the building of the community tennis courts.

In 1973 under the Board of Trade Act, the New Dundee Board of Trade became incorporated. It became a registered charitable organization under the federal charities act allowing it to issue charitable receipts for taxation purposes. In 1988 the Board of Trade initiated and supervised the construction of the 24 unit Maple Heights senior retirement apartment building. The Board of Trade continues to administer the building.

Residents of New Dundee continue to benefit from the efforts of the Board of Trade. The Board of Trade sponsors the Boy Scouts organization as well as ice time at the nearby Plattsville arena for hockey tournaments and figure skating. Young ladies are sponsored in the annual Ambassador-to-the-Fair competition held at the New Hamburg Fall Fair. Christmas fruit baskets are given to needy senior citizens. An annual Remembrance Day ceremony is organized by the Board of Trade. Members of the Board conduct roadside cleanups twice a year and install Christmas lighting during the holiday season. The Board of Trade supports local businesses with this website and appreciation plaques. Recently, the Board of trade donated $10,000 towards the New Dundee Parks Improvement Project.

To financially support these and other projects, members of the Board of Trade hold three annual fundraisers: a Fish Fry in September, a pancake breakfast in March, and a community barbeque during New Dundee’s Victoria Day celebrations.
